Hoja Santa has a complex anise / nutmeg / tarragon flavour and contains a similar volatile oil profile as the sassafras tree. In fact Sassafras is used to make root beer and in the southern United States, hoja santa is known as the root beer plant.
Chop into eggs, add to soups sauces, stews, use to wrap and steam fish or tamales 🙂
