- hoja santa, also called momo, acoyo, tlanepa o tlanepaquelite, and called Mexican pepperleaf and root beer plant in English, is an herb native to Mexico and South America. related to black pepper, it has a flavor like anise (or root beer, thus the name).
it’s used in various ways in Mexican cuisine, from tamales to pozole and mole. you can use it fresh or dried, as an edible wrapper, to flavor hot chocolate, or like tarragon in eggs.
medicinally, according to the link above, “it helps to relieve fever and inflammation of the kidneys, to eases stomach pain, and helps to avoid indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, y respiratory problems (particularly asthma & bronchitis). Additionally, it helps to combat anxiety and insomnia thanks to the sedatives it contains.”
